More than 300 Beard Papa locations around the world — Taiwan, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Singapore… This store is inside the Little Tokyo Shopping Center in downtown Los Angeles, California, USA.

The mascot of Beard Papa is based on the grandfather of founder Yuji Hirota, who grew up  with cream puffs or “choux cream” in Osaka, Japan. The name of the company is Muginoho, which is privately held.

Cream puffs are very delicate must be eaten immediately! If refrigerated, they may keep for close to 24 hours. The filling is a mixture of custard and whipped cream, with no preservatives added.

Go to Utsuwa-no-Yakata in Little Tokyo to shop for gifts — sake bottles,  tea set, chopsticks, bowls… It’s  at the Little Tokyo Shopping Center in downtown Los Angeles.

Utsuwa-no-Yakata means “House of Pottery” and the store is owned by Tajimi USA.

This photo was taken in 2008. Not sure if the store has since changed management. (The shopping center was bought out by Koreans in January 2009). I hear people refer to it as Spiga Hello Kitty. I don’t remember seeing any Hello Kitty back then.

Mikawaya Sweets in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles

Mikawaya is known as the company that invented mochi ice cream! They’re the finest name in Japanese pastries since 1910.

The Mikawaya store in the open Japanese Village Plaza gets more traffic, but they do have this store in the enclosed Little Tokyo Shopping Center a few blocks away. Among their flavors of mochi ice cream are red bean (ogura), mango, green tea, kona coffee, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry.
